In February 2013, Operation Tornado (a scheme involving scrap metal recyclers) was developed by the British Metals Recycling Association and the police.

Fundamentally the new legislation outlawed cash transactions for scrap or waste metal and made accountability paramount. All dealers had to put arrangements in place for cheque or electronic fund payments or face losing their operating licence.

Although industry focused software options were available, they were costly and did not fulfil the needs of the client. 

Entrepreneur Spencer Smith saw these new requirements as a lucrative gap in the market, immediately recognizing the need for a database solution that would ensure total compliance for scrap metal dealers.
