Umbraco's CMS comes of age with Microsoft's WPI

Umbraco has been around for many years now, but perhaps now that Microsoft has taken this open source CMS under its wing (and started pushing it to it's many partners) it will now really start to make a big impression.

Built on Microsoft's .NET technology stack, this is not just another 'out of the box' CMS system, but a content management system for .NET developers.

According to Microsoft, Umbraco is a powerful, flexible and easy to use CMS platform which has an extensive suite of professional features, many of which, as it is Open Source, are free or available at very low cost.

Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of this CMS system is that it is 'cloud ready' enabling you to realise the full business benefits of cloud computing, the Windows Azure cloud development platform being built in.

They also say that it is easy to use, however others say that while this is true, the software does have a bit of a steep learning curve.

This CMS system is totally different in construction from the plug and play software that is best represented by Drupal or Joomla. Niels Hartvig, Umbraco's creator, instead has built a system that places no limit on what it in theory can do, all the while being easy to use (but see above!).

The big change for Umbraco has been Microsoft's Web Platform Installer (WPI), this proving to be a real catalyst, there now being over 7,000 downloads a week.

Whatever, with Microsoft being involved, Umbraco is sure to be going places.
